München, 23. Oktober 2010, Bericht: Joseph Bray

München RFC : RG Heidelberg II
25 : 5

After an evenly matched and somewhat frantic opening, it was the visitors Heidelberg who took an early lead. Showing an ambition to move the ball into space they created a well worked overlap for the right winger to go over in the corner. The conversion attempt just going wide. Munich quickly re-found their pattern and began to play their rugby in the opposition's half. Sustained pressure resulted in a kickable penalty, which points' machine Thomas Hensel willingly converted. Munich 3-RG Heidelberg 5. A continued period of intensity from the Munich team brought a strong surge from the Munich pack. Desperate defence from RG Heidelberg was not enough to stop American Prop Roger Hutchison powering over from short range. Hensel converted well. 10-5 Munich. Minutes later, clever opportunism from Swiss winger Marcel Birrer saw him gather the ball and offload in one movement to the surging Spanish bull Daniel Llano Jimenez who ran powerfully through a huge hole in the RG Heidelberg defence to score his first try for Munich. Hensel converted. 17-5 Munich. Munich continued to camp in RG Heidelberg territory and quick, clean ball allowed the Munich back line to find full back Jonathan Fuller in space. Fuller exploded onto the ball and with a beautiful swerve beat the last defender, to go over under the posts. Munich 22- RG Heidelberg 5.
In the second half, RG Heidelberg showed character and strength to work themselves back into the game. Good strong running from their back row unit and nice hands from the backline made them a constant threat. Through a Thomas Hensel penalty, Munich kept the score board ticking to take the score to 25-5. The biggest cheer of the 2nd half came on 62 minutes with the arrival of Munich stalwart and Chairman, Helmut Kraiger. The cheers would have turned to ecstasy in the final minutes had a more sympathetic pass allowed Kraiger, with the line at his mercy to go over for his x??? try for Munich.
At 22-5 up at half time, Munich will be frustrated not to have added more to their tally yet credit must be given to RG Heidelberg for frustrating Munich in their ambitions.
The expectations and potential within this Munich team are high. Surely, it is only a matter of time, training and patience before we see this good team becoming something more…
