U12  Rugby Turnier in Worms

Worms, 23. November 2014

Bericht: Alessandro Cossu
The U12 team travelled on Saturday to Worms to take part in the last tournament of the first half of this season, an SAS tournament organised by the Rugby Union of Baden-Württemberg and hosted by the Rugby Club Worms. Three major Heidelberg teams (SCN, TSV, HRK), SC 1880 from Frankfurt, a pirate team from Heidelberg and the MRFC were the contenders, playing in two pools; the MRFC played in pool B against SCN and HRK. All the other teams were already surprised to discover that a Munich team had travelled so far to play in Worms; the surprise became even bigger when they saw our team stunning SCN in the first game 15:0, courtesy of two tries by Daniel and one try by Konstantin. In the second game against HRK, played after a short break of only ten minutes, it looked as if the MRFC would win this match, too. Excellent defensive work by the whole team and good breaks by Oscar and Konstantin payed dividends, when Konstantin crossed HRK’s tryline to equalize the opponents’s first try. Munich exploited the momentum and exerted pressure on HRK, but some lapses of concentration meant a couple of good scoring chances were squandered. HRK, instead, grabbed its chances to make it 10:5. Munich thus concluded the pool round behind HRK and in front of SCN. Next was the match against the formidable TSV, probably the best Heidelberg team. Although the MRFC did not manage to score and was beaten 20:0, our boys made TSV work really hard for victory.
In the final game of the tournament, the MRFC met again HRK, but this time it would be a different story. After having trailed 0:10 at half-time as a consequence of poor tackling, our boys walked on the pitch in the second half determined to restore some pride. But not only did they restore their pride: they mauled HRK into submission and scored three unanswered tries, which gave Munich a much deserved, final victory.
Overall Munich’s participation was a success: trainers from Heidelberg and Frankfurt expressed a strong interest in meeting us again next year and all the teams showed great respect for our boys.
