Frauen Deutsche 7er Liga Süd in Nürnberg
Samstag, 21.

Versuche: Lisa Goldmann 2x, Zoé Chioato, Lisa Steyer 3x
Erhöhungen: Zsuzsanna Jakab 3x

Mannschaftsaufstellung MRFC:
Ashworth Julika, Chioato Zoé (Capt.), Collin Audrey, Djinadou Florence, Exley Kirsty, Goldmann Lisa, Jakab Zsuzsanna, Knigge Karin, Marcolongo Elena, Mues Dorothée, Regina Springl, Lisa Steyer.

Frauen Deutsche 7er Liga Süd in Augsburg
Samstag, 07. April 2018, Bericht: Carlotta Ludwig und Lisa Steyer

Last Saturday a motivated squad of 11 MRFC Ladies, their coach Stephanie Mues (who just arrived back from a four-month trip around the world) and five supporters made their way to Augsburg, to participate in the Bavarian league tournament there.

München RFC : FC Eintracht Bamberg
32 : 0

In the first game the girls showed good pressure in defense and counter rucking skills. Nevertheless in attack their support was often too slow, breakthroughs that could have ended in a try got stopped beforehand.
In the second half they focused on improving their support play and managed to keep the ball alive by passing, offloading from the ground and moving it from one side to the other. With a comfortable win on their hands the MRFC ladies went straight through to the semifinals.
Tries: Kirsty Exley, Lisa Steyer 3x, Florence Djinadou, Karin Knigge
Conversions: Victoria Flint 2x, Audrey Collin

München RFC : Würzburger RK
0 : 24

The second game was to decide who finishes first in their pool. With Würzburg being a very fast team, they knew that fitness and good defense were key factors to win this match. Unfortunately some missed tackles, again too slow support play, weak rucks and a lack of communication let to a result that doesn’t reflect the effort the players were putting in this game. This meant the MRFC girls had to play their semifinal against StuSta Black, who had finished first in their pool.

München RFC : RC Stusta München
0 : 41

Against a strong StuSta side, the mistakes the girls kept doing were punished straight away. A lot of diagonal running of the MRFC girls instead of attacking the line gave StuSta the chance to take all space away with their rush defense. Too slow ruck support invited them to contest the rucks or to go for the ball. Hence this match was lost by a margin. On the positive side this game made very clear in which areas the girls need to improve the most and the team is determined to work on these.

München RFC : TUS Fürstenfeldbruck
5 : 12

The last game for third place promised to be a mind game. Which of the two sides manages to get their act together after a lost semifinal?
It was certainly a tough one for the MRFC Ladies; it was very visible they gave everything to stop Fürstenfeldbruck from scoring. At parts there was very strong support, but eventually tiredness (due to heat/ lack of fitness) was kicking in. Shifting was slowing down which left them outnumbered on the wing. In the end they lost this game by one try.
Try: Barbara Lesbegueries

Our thanks go to Rugby Football Club Augsburg, who hosted a ladies tournament for the first time and did a fantastic job! Although we’re not happy with our results we had a great time at your pitch.
We’re also very happy to have our coach Stephanie Mues is back. With her help we will tackle our weaknesses to come back stronger at the next tournament in Nürnberg!

Mannschaftsaufstellung MRFC:
Collin Audrey, Djinadou Florence, Exley Kirsty, Flint Victoria (Capt.), Flisak Joanna, Goldmann Lisa, Knigge Karin, Lesbegueries Barbara, Marcolongo Elena, Schätzl Anna, Lisa Steyer

Frauen Deutsche 7er Liga Süd in München Freimann
Samstag, 24. März 2018, Bericht: Zoe Chiaoto

After the cancellation of the tournament in the beginning of march and the almost cancellation of this one, the “first” tournament of 2018 was finally upon us! We were eager to finally get to play. Unfortunately, the winter months had left us with a bunch of injuries, sick and/or unavailable players. So only 10 players - most of them either new to rugby or very old and back from retirement - made the “long” journey to the Studentenstadt.

München RFC : RFC Augsburg
24 : 5

The MRFC Ladies started off very chaotic in defence and in attack, mostly due to the fact, that a bunch of people played together for the very first time. Augsburg was chaotic as well and didn’t capitalise on our late rucking support or halfhearted tackling. It was a balanced game, with MRFC a bit more on the front foot as Julika Ashworth powered through defenders and offloaded effectively to teammates. It was finally Zoé Chioato who managed to score two tries in the first half, assists being from Victoria Flint and Emmie van Oirschot. Two changes were made at halftime with Lisa Goldmann coming in for Audrey Collin and Zsuzsanna Jakab for Zoé Chioato. It was Zsuszanna Jakab who took over the responsibility of scoring two more tries for MRFC. Special mention goes out to PROP! Lisa Goldmann who chased winger Zoë Mannhardt from Augsburg all the way down the pitch to prevent an Augsburg try. I guess there must have been beer somewhere behind the MRFC tryline. :)

München RFC : Würzburger RK
0 : 26

The second game of the day was going to be the most important one! A win would secure the place in the weaker semifinal. The MRFC Ladies had never lost to Würzburg before, but a very poor display of rugby made it happen. Tackling was mediocre at best and the willingness to win was not present which resulted in a 00:26 loss.

München RFC : RC Stusta München
0 : 46

The previous loss meant that we had to play the Stusta Ladies in the semifinal. Even though the game was more structured, we didn’t manage to win or put Stusta under any kind of pressure.

München RFC : TUS Fürstenfeldbruck
26 : 0

Finally, we work up for the last game of the day. In order to secure the third place overall, structure was the key to our win. We played patiently and Lisa Goldmann, Zoé Chioato scored in the first half and Céline Calvo twice in the second half. We were dominant over Fürstenfeldbruck and won back every single scrum. Still, we were late in rucks again, Fürstenfeldbruck was luckily not clever enough to capitalise from it.

All in all the day didn’t go as planned, due to all the injuries and unavailabilities that continue to haunt us this season. In order to qualify for the German Championship we need to come in second at least. Würzburg now has a 2 point lead as we go into tournament number 4/6 on the 7th april in Augsburg. 3rd place is the minimum we had to achieve and with the team we had, it’s a good result. Emmie van Oirschot, Joanna Flisak and Julika Ashwort played their first league rugby tournament with us and did very well. Emmie van Oirschot secured the ball effectively, Joanna had some strong runs with the ball and Julika Ashworth beat many defenders and did some strong offloads. Thank you everyone that came out to support us. Special thank you to Steve Harries for coaching and your kind words, Adam Popperwell for the Warm-Up help and everyone else involved.

Mannschaftsaufstellung MRFC:
Ashworth Julika, Calvo Céline, Chioato Zoé, Collin Audrey, Djinadou Florence, Flint Victoria, Flisak Joanna, Goldmann Lisa, Jakab Zsuzsanna (Capt.), van Oirschot Emmie

Player of the day: Zoé Chioato
Hammer of the day: Victoria Flint
Bitch of the pitch: Brian Kikawa, for arriving very late!

Frauen Freundschaftsspiel in Zagreb (Kroatien)
Samstag 10.03, Bericht: Zoe Chiaoto

On Friday, March 10th, 2018 the MRFC Ladies travelled with the MRFC Men to Zagreb, Croatia in order to play a friendly 7s tournament with Ženski Akademski Ragbi Klub Mladost and Ženski Akademski Ragbi Klub Zagreb. The trip gave a unique opportunity to both the Men’s and Ladies team to bond together and support one another on and off the pitch. This friendly tournament will also be remembered forever by 4 of the players who played their first 7s game! In order to prepare for the weekend in Zagreb, the MRFC Ladies needed to initiate these 4 new players into the game plan.

München RFC : Mladost Zagreb
14 : 22

MRFC Ladies played their first game against Mladost on a cool but bright spring morning. The MRFC Ladies had played Mladost during snow rugby 2018 (winning both games 6:1 and 9:5). But this time the teams would face off with perfect rugby conditions: in the sun, slightly muddy and without the snow!
The MRFC Ladies were pumped to play but were too slow at shifting the defensive line and were unable to make important tackles. Elisa Semedo was able to quickly sprint through the Mladost defensive line and break tackles. Zsuzsanna Jakab was also able to break through the defensive line with her ankle-breaking dummy passes to score a try.
The MRFC Ladies wanted to show that they were as strong in 7s as they are in the Snow form of the game. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be against a strong team with home advantage.

Tries: Zsuzsanna Jakab, Elisa Semedo
Conversions: Zsuzsanna Jakab 2x

München RFC : RC Zagreb
20 : 10

After the loss from the first game, the MRFC Ladies did not want to go home empty handed. It seemed the ladies had now shaken off the 11 hour Friday evening bus journey and started the game flying. RC Zagreb proved to be tough opponents that were able to offload very successfully. The MRFC Ladies needed to not only learn from their mistakes and improve the defensive line, but also needed to make tackles that prevented offloads. Similar to the first game, Zsuzsanna Jakab and Elisa Semedo knew exactly how to get around the Zagreb Ladies, with speed and smart routes. Elena Marcolongo had an amazing run after receiving the ball on the wing and scoring her first try for the last play of the game! Victoria Flint was key to the victory with her leadership both on and off the pitch.

Tries: Zsuzsanna Jakab, Elisa Semedo (2x), Elena Marcolongo

Honorable mention goes to Viviane Bunn making her tackles, to Joanna Flisak for breaking through tackles and offloading successfully, and to Regina Springl for bulldozing through the defensive line multiple times! A very impressive performance on and off the pitch.

After the tournament Coach Scott Warner commented ‘The Ladies showed complete commitment to each other and did everything they could to win. After a slow start they displayed great character to pick themselves up and work even harder in the 2nd game. The level of comradery within the squad is excellent with a great balance of youth and experience. This preseason tour was perfect preparation for a long and successful season. Everyone is excited to see how far this group of players can go.’

Mannschaftsaufstellung MRFC:
Viviane Bunn, Florence Djinadou, Victoria Flint, Joanna Flisak, Zsuzsanna Jakab (VC), Elena Marcolongo, Sara Mayoral, Elisa Semedo (C), Regina Springl, Lisa Steyer,

Frauen Snowrugbyturnier in Tarvisio (Italien)
Samstag 13.01. und Sonntag 14.01. Bericht: Zoe Chiaoto

A total of 22 girls participated at the 6th edition of the snow rugby 5s tournament in Tarvisio (ITA). The theme of the tournament was ‘Superheroes’ and so the MRFC Ladies decided to become the Thorettes – the female version of Thor, the God of Thunder and Lightning! As winners of the 2017 edition, KiT Teamwear sponsored us one set of jerseys with an amazing Thor-like design. Thank you very much! The aim was to defend the 2017 title and the chances were doubled due to the sign-up of two MRFC teams: the MRFC Thorettes and the Oktoberfest 7s Thorettes. What no one expected is that both teams made it to the final, which the MRFC Thorettes won by a heartbeat in overtime.

In the final both teams started like a bullet, neither wanted to lose to the other. Who thought the MRFC teammates were going to go easy on each other was definitely proven wrong. It was the most entertaining and intense game of the whole female tournament, seeing as the MRFC Ladies had won all of their previous games quite comfortably. Quickly, the Oktoberfest 7s Thorettes opened the scoreboard with Claudia Redon blasting over the tryline, just to have the MRFC Thorettes equalise seconds after with Florence Djinadou pumping over the line – 1:1. Both teams had breaks that were stopped shortly before the tryline by exemplary defensive work from each side. Zoë Vallinga from the MRFC Thorettes finally managed to break through and score, but the first half ended 2:2 with a try in the corner by Oktoberfest 7s Thorettes’ Karin Knigge just before the whistle. The second half was the practically the same scenario, a lot of fighting, great tackles, but with time legs were starting to get weak and exhaustion started creeping in. The MRFC Thorettes were in luck that Florence Djinadou seemed to still have some energy reserves left as she managed to score again this time with 3 defenders on her back. Again, the response of the Oktoberfest 7s Thorettes was imminent and so Claudia Rendon sneaked her way over the tryline after a missed tackle. Victoria Flint managed to get the MRFC Thorettes in front again after a nice run on the snow – 4:3, but unfortunately/fortunately Ana Masa equalized the game seconds before the end – 4:4. So the final was going into sudden death overtime. The MRFC Thorettes won the coin toss and started ball in hand. From the kick-off Zoé Chioato looped around Kirsty Exley, used the overlap to bind the last defender and passed the ball to Zoë Vallinga on the wing who scored. The game was over and everyone started celebrating together.
Both teams had girls that were new to snow rugby and the second team even had 3 girls that played their first rugby tournament. In total 18/20 MRFC players scored tries and it was amazing to see how quickly everyone adapted to the specific snow rugby rules, the icy ball and the snowy playing ground. This has been a great experience and we want to thank everyone who made this possible, we are truly grateful.
A big thank you goes out to Dénes Antal, the only man at the hen party, our physio with magic hands who helped us immensely during this tiring two-day tournament!
