1. Bundesliga
München Dantestadion, 05. April 2003, Bericht: Bill Rogan
München RFC : DRC Hannover
8 : 72
The atmosphere in the Munich camp before the match was, to put it mildly, subdued. After so many defeats, the players found it difficult to motivate themselves for the game against the German champions DRC, which, under other circumstances, would have already been a difficult one. Pressure on those players making their 1st, 50th or 100th appearance for MRFC, plus last minute changes to the line up only helped to increase the tension for what was, in the end, a walkover for the visitors. DRC's ability to commit only as many players as necessary to rucks and mauls, Munich's inability to react to this, and a defence with more holes than a particularly holey collander, meant that time after time DRC had a large overlap and was able to score easily. Rory Donoghue's injury (broken arm) in the 20th minute didn't do much to up the confidence of the Munich players, and the first half ended 3:41.
The second half was a bit more balanced, and Munich was able to string together some good sequences of play, where forwards and backs interlinked well. One such phase of play lead to Thomas Edenhofer going over for his first try in the Bundesliga. All credit to the Munich lads for not giving up, and thanks to DRC for making the second trip down to Munich. –
